The High School of Glasgow

Pupils: over 700, aged 5-18

Known as the oldest school in Scotland, The High School of Glasgow is one of the city’s best private schools. In 2009, The Times placed it as the top independent school in Scotland for Higher and Standard Grade results.  Notable alumni include Graeme Kelling, guitarist in Scottish band Deacon Blue. Additionally, the school also provides a safe and happy environment in which children are encouraged to achieve their full potential both academically and socially.

Hillhead Primary School

Pupils: over 650, aged 4-11

Hillhead primary is Glasgow’s largest primary school after moving to a new location in August 2011. The school is now situated next to Kelvingrove Park, this beautiful environment helps lift children’s spirits and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, if is known as a school of high standards and expectations of its pupils, this also proves to be a very popular school for locals.

Scotstoun Primary School

Pupils: approximately 393, aged 4-11

Scotstoun is one of the smaller primary schools on the list. The school has many perks including a great number of after school clubs tailored to both boys and girls. Also its in the same catchment area for Jordanhill School which continues to be the best public high school in the city. Situated just a short walk from Victoria Park provides great after school entertainment in the form of tennis and basketball courts. Interestingly, it also has famous alumni including Mark Knopfler, lead guitarist in British rock band Dire Straits.

 

Kelvinside Academy

Pupils: 640, aged 3-18

Situated in the same area as Hillhead Primary and near Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Kelvinside is a private school for both primary and secondary school students. With the motto, “Be the best you can be”, Kelvinside truly believe that their students should incorporate this into every aspect of life. This is the perfect place to send your little ones. Furthermore, if you want them to continue on to the high school their pupils exam results are in the top 20 in the country.

Jordanhill School

Pupils: 1037, aged 4-18

Named as the country’s top state school alongside Edinburgh’s Broughton High School. Jordanhill is Scotland’s only state-funded self-governing secondary school and regularly tops the school league tables. An incredible 91% of students gaining 3 or more Higher qualifications last year! The school is located in an affluent area of Glasgow and tends to be a very popular first choice.

 

Glasgow Gaelic School

Pupils: 750, aged 3-18

The Glasgow Gaelic school is the second strongest school academically in the city.  82% of its students gaining 3 or more Higher qualifications last year. The school takes on pupils from the ages of 3-18. Also its secondary school is the only one of its kind in Scotland as it teaches most secondary subjects in the Gaelic language.

 

The Glasgow Academy

Pupils: approx. 1350, aged 3-18

Last year, the Glasgow Academy was the highest ranked school in the city for Highers with 67.5% pupils gaining A grades.  Moving on to top universities like the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde. Additionally, the school aims to look beyond academic goals.  Furthermore, final year pupils are given the opportunity to take part in life skills courses such as a childcare qualification and home economics.

St Aloysius’ College

Pupils: 1580, aged 3-18

The largest school on the list, St Aloysius’ College is a Catholic private school with capacity to take on both primary and secondary aged kids. The school aims with the help of staff, parents and pupils, to create a strong educational community with people at its core. This strategy is definitely working. The school ranked 6th in Scotland for Higher exam results last year and were the highest ranking school in Glasgow for Advanced Highers!
